Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) – this a type of cancer of the blood cells. The term “chronic” indicates that this cancer tends to progress more slowly than acute forms of leukemia. The term “myelogenous” refers to the type of cells affected by this cancer (red blood cells).

The “Philadelphia Chromosome” is the nickname given to the cell mutation that  most often causes CML.  This mutation can cause other forms of leukemia as well, including ALL or Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia.  A Kinase Inhibitor drug developed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals called “Gleevec”or Imatinib, has been so effective that many CML patients control their disease with one pill a day with little side effects.
