Empower Homeopathy
January 15, 2019
Dear Friends,
Last month I sent you a special request to contribute to Americans for Homeopathy Choice (AFHC) in order to help us protect homeopathy from a capricious U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that is trying to curtail consumer access to homeopathic remedies. Many of you responded, and we are grateful for your donations. But we are only part of the way to our goal of $12,500, and I am hoping those who have not given yet will consider again contributing something to help us win this important fight.
In my previous email I told you that I see this fight to be of the greatest importance in the decades-long effort by Citizens for Health to create safer, more effective and less costly health choices for American families. I am making this special appeal to you because recent moves by the FDA could deliver a potentially fatal one-two punch to homeopathy in America.
A proposal by the agency, if adopted, would allow unwarranted bans on many remedies. It would also seriously undermine trust in homeopathic remedies by withdrawing strict guidelines for their manufacture.
Spearheading the Fight: Americans for Homeopathy Choice
One organization, Americans for Homeopathy Choice, is spearheading the consumer fight to preserve the right of all Americans to choose homeopathy. The organization is also working to protect manufacturing standards that have assured homeopathy users of high quality and purity for 30 years. Of course, AFHC needs money to win this fight on behalf of us all. Citizen for Health is putting its full support behind Americans for Homeopathy Choice.
To help out, you can visit the donation page on the organization’s website by clicking the button below. I am asking you to consider a recurring donation of at least $25 or more per month to provide ongoing support for these efforts.AFHC has already slowed the FDA down with a formal petition to which the FDA must respond BEFORE it can issue new guidelines. This slowdown creates time and opportunity for the agency, the public and the health marketplace to consider a sound approach to regulating homeopathy that helps to create a healthier, safer and more economically affordable health care system. AFHC, in consultation with others in the homeopathy community, is now pursuing a long-term regulatory solution, a solution that once and for all will recognize and protect homeopathy’s unique status and empower consumers who want to use it.
Why We Need To Be Concerned
Here’s the short version of why we need to be concerned:
1. The FDA’s proposed guidelines are a regulatory wolf in sheep’s clothing. These guidelines eliminate sound quality standards and simultaneously threaten access to important remedies used by millions every day.
2. Under the new rules homeopathic remedies would become technically illegal. That means the FDA could arbitrarily withdraw remedies from the marketplace at any time and thereby curtail the choices available to consumers.
3. The FDA’s proposed approval process for homeopathic remedies would be a de facto permanent ban. For remedies that are withdrawn or new, the FDA could require the same approval process applied to pharmaceuticals, a process too costly for homeopathy manufacturers.
For more details, keep reading.
Eliminating Manufacturing Standards
The proposed new FDA guidelines (technically referred to as “guidance”) would entirely eliminate current manufacturing standards without replacing them. That would open a giant regulatory loophole which could lead to poorly manufactured, improperly labeled and even fake products. That’s why we say the FDA proposal is a regulatory wolf in sheep’s clothing. The FDA says its new guidelines are designed to protect the public. But what the agency is proposing will actually harm the public.
“Technically Illegal” Spells Danger
The guidelines would also throw homeopathic remedies into a legal limbo in which nearly all of them would be considered unapproved and therefore technically illegal. The FDA could then at its whim permit some homeopathic products to remain available while requiring any remedy the agency singles out to go through the same costly approval process as a pharmaceutical. That process is costly in part because it carefully tests the toxicity of new drugs. But homeopathy is inherently safe and nontoxic.
Approval Process Actually a De Facto Ban
Because homeopathic remedies are made from commonly available substances, no company can patent homeopathic products and recoup the multi-million dollar investment that the approval process demands. Therefore, the requirement that a homeopathic remedy undergo the same approval process as a pharmaceutical chemical would be a de facto permanent ban.
One Big Legal Obstacle for the FDA
The FDA does, however, have one big legal obstacle to implementing its guidelines, but only if we stand firm and are ready to fight the agency in court. The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act which gives the FDA authority to govern both pharmaceutical chemicals and homeopathic remedies specifies a separate approval process for homeopathy.
The more than 1300 remedies which have received approval are already listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States as the food and drug law specifies. Their approval cannot be arbitrarily rescinded by the FDA. We believe that if it comes to a court battle, we would prevail, but not without the necessary legal and financial resources.
Banning Homeopathy Because It’s Too Popular (Really!)
In a strange twist the FDA’s proposed guidelines would allow the agency to ban a particular homeopathic remedy simply because an increasing number of people are using it. This is because such remedies “may cause users to delay or discontinue medical treatments [using pharmaceuticals] that have been found safe and effective.”
In other words the FDA believes it is a threat to public health if people choose to try an inherently safe homeopathic remedy BEFORE resorting to a pharmaceutical product that may list serious and even fatal side effects.
In truth, the FDA may be acting this way because homeopathy is the fastest growing form of non-chemical alternative medicine in the United States today.
Americans for Homeopathy Choice Needs Help NOW
To oppose the FDA onslaught and to secure the legal status of homeopathy will take money, of course. So, I ask you to give generously to Americans for Homeopathy Choice as your budget allows.
Recurring donations of whatever size are especially important to provide ongoing funding and support. I hope you will consider a recurring donation of at least $25 or more per month. But, of course, anything you can give either recurring or one-time will be appreciated. Just click on the button below to go to the donation page.Thank you for being part of the Citizens for Health team. Together we can protect the alternatives that truly keep us healthy.
