Hi Energy Psychology Community! My name is Debora Cohen and I am so Excited about the work Eric and Ruth are doing here at WeHeal! I am honored to be a part of this amazing team of communities and monitors. I met Eric a long time ago. He hired me to do Yoga and Energy Therapy. I worked with him on a regular weekly basis. I even had the opportunity to work with him during his transplant and unfortunate Identity Theft while he was in Seattle. Eric and I worked together addressing physical challenges and psychological challenges. I really appreciated how open he was to any and everything that might help him, both spiritually and physically. He also was open about his strong emotions such as intense fear and anger. I have worked with other stage 4 cancer patients who just didn’t present to me all of the qualities that Eric displayed. One person used just the power of positive thinking and she never addressed her fears, spirituality or energy healing until the very end when she died at a young age of only 42 years old. Unlike Eric, this person was very particular and set in her ways about what she thought would heal her naturally or without chemo, from a very progressive cancer. The reason why I believe it is important to be open and work psychologically and energetically is that it can assist the immune system by reducing overall stress and mental disturbances. Eric recently told me that while we worked together he never relapsed during his cancer treatment. I actually was amazed to hear this because I didn’t know.
As an Energy Therapist for over 20 years I enjoy working with Energy Psychology because it actively involves my clients and empowers them towards their healing and goals. I’ve seen it help people aspire to true freedom and understanding of their problems. The treatments are fun and simple and clients are amazed by their effectiveness. Working with the wisdom of the energy system: the meridians, the chakras and the human biofield, instigate insightful realizations towards my client’s problems solving wisdom and releasing traumas. There is a growing body of research evidence supporting the use of Energy Psychology techniques, but they are still considered alternative or complementary and it’s important to obtain informed consent before using with clients.

State of the Research: What we know and What we Don’t know

I discovered Energy Psychology while I was studying at my doctoral program in clinical psychology. Although I was already doing energy therapy, what attracted me Energy Psychology was that it was a well-researched, grounded and approved with the American Psychological Association (APA) for continuing education. I read one study that showed Energy Psychology to be more effective, longer-lasting and without side effects than cognitive-behavioral therapy with medication for phobias, trauma and anxiety, with fewer appointments!! There is an international organization that you can evaluate the research at http://www.energypsych.org .

Addressing Systemic Energetic Interference (Non-Polarization/Global Energy Field Imbalances/Readiness to Benefit (Proper Polarization/Global Energy Field Balance)

The first step to an energy psychology treatment is addressing Systemic Energetic Interferences (SEI). These are simple ways to balance and center the client’s energy field so their energy is focused towards their goals. The human energy field is affected by many things such as dehydration, accidents, trauma, pollution, lack of sleep, medication, health problems, etc. We test and address SEIs by doing simple procedures such as self-affirmations while rubbing the heart, simple exercises, deep breathing, or just drinking a tall glass of water. Working on SEI’s can be a treatment of its own especially for those with chronic health problems. What is important though, addressing SEIs enables energy psychology treatments to be successful and long-lasting. Think of it this way, you are driving a car to your destination but you are too low on gas to get there, or there is something wrong with your engine, or your tires or bald and you are in bad weather. Even though your goal destination seems strait forward and your car might seem to be in great shape, there might be obstacles that can prevent you from getting to your goal. Addressing SEI’s can be like fixing energetic mechanical problems in your biofield that can obstruct goals.

Treatment Intentions (Selecting the Issue to Work On): Identifying the Priority Goal (What the Client Wants to Accomplish from the Treatment) and the Priority Treatment Focus (What Most Needs to be treated in Order to Best Help the Client Accomplish This Goal).

I love goal setting and intention because it is leads to our own mind creating wellness, and living our Souls purpose. What is great about Energy Psychology is that we use energy testing to get clear on how to clarify each goal/intention before we start treatment. Usually clients present to me a problem and what they would like to accomplish. Often these problems have so many layers to them so energy testing will help to choose the first layer to work on for the session. Like a detective, energy testing utilizes the body’s wisdom to find out the top priority goal. After the client sets a goal we ask the body if this is in his/her highest interest for us to work on in this session. If the muscle locks that is affirmative. If the muscle unlocks we continue to discover what the best goal is for the treatment.

Progress Evaluation Method (SUD, etc): Determining the Progress Rating Scale to Be Used (ex: Craving, etc) and the Depiction Method through which the Progress Will Be Expressed (Numbers, Meter, Hand Depiction, etc)

To evaluate the success of the Energy Psychology treatment we first get a measurement of distress of the problem we are going to work on. I usually ask “on a scale of 0-10 (10 being the worse) how big is this problem?” Clients will give me a number, but sometimes they will something like, “it’s really big.” We can also muscle test to see how big the problem really is. Sometimes people can get so use to ongoing problem they may not realize how much it is effecting their health. Or a client might think a problem is bigger than it really is. The end goal of treatment is to get the measurement of distress down to 0-1, or the client says, “This doesn’t even seem to be an issue anymore”.

Addressing Objections to Succeeding (Psychological/Psychoenergetic Reversals in Order To Succeed With the Treatment.

Have you ever wanted to make a change only to find yourself doing things that are exactly opposite of what you want? In Yoga there is a saying: “The mind that makes you ill is the same mind that heals you”. The “Mind” is a highly complex intelligent energetic system. When working towards a goal or to heal a problem, positive thinking or self-affirmations is probably not going to be enough. We must be willing to look at all the hidden and uncomfortable places in our mind that are creating obstacles towards goals. We can always go on a month long meditation retreat and maybe find total mental freedom but what happens when we are back home facing everyday life?

Energy Psychology gives clients a means to live their everyday lives and create the healthy changes they are looking for by obtaining mental unity towards goals and intentions. This is done by honoring our negative emotions, resistances, and blockages with self-compassion, patience, and love. For example, a client wants to quit smoking but when testing for Psychological Reversals we find there is at least one or more. One of the problems we discover is that the client will not know who she is if she stops smoking because she identifies herself as someone who smokes. Instead of pushing this away with positive statements, I would have her rub her heart while saying “Even though I identify myself as someone who smokes, I deeply and completely love myself”. I would continue with this type of dialog until this stressful blockage towards her goal to quit smoking is resolved. After it is resolved we would then go on to check for any other Psychological Reversals. Once the obstacles are resolved we would go onto treatment. However even during treatment more obstacles may arise and need to be addressed. It is important to address each obstacle in order to achieve total mental harmony towards goals. Our mental obstacles actually provide wisdom and self-understanding. They even provide clues regarding maintaining success in treatment.

In summary, Psychological Reversals is an internal split where part of you does not want to achieve a goal. I might be because a part of you does not think it’s safe or that you deserve it, etc. It is different from Systematic Energy Interference (SEI) because your whole system is scrambled, or off centered or flipped backwards. We need to do the SEIs first so clients can have clarity and then go forward. And from that clarity we choose the intention to work on.

    PR are conflicts within yourself.

Priority Treatment Method Selection and Implementation (Meridian, Chakra, Biofield or Other) Step Selection after Each Round of Implementing the Priority Treatment Method.

Energy Psychology incorporates many types of therapies that work on the energy field. Clients might tap on acupressure points on their meridian system or breathe deeply into each chakra. Self-affirmations and self-acceptance statements are generally incorporated with treatment. Energy testing provides information regarding the best treatment to use for resolving problems. Often more than one type of energy treatment might be needed to resolve a problem. For example a problem might need both a biofield treatment and a meridian treatment.

Session Completion, Treatment Completion and Homework

At the end of a session I always check in with my client to see if they feel complete and if the session was helpful. More work might be needed around particular goals and we talk about what can be done in-between sessions. I have discovered that many of my clients who see psychotherapist never receive support in-between sessions. My clients enjoy homework such as brief energy exercises, affirmations and tapping to assist them mentally and emotionally anytime they choose. They tell me they like learning about their energy system and it gives them empowerment towards their own healing.
