I am Eugene, Lurinda’s husband (since September, 2017) and am doing research on why the wounds on her knee will not heal. She has had three knee replacements since 01/01/2018.
Her surgeon told her the ONLY cure will be to amputate the leg above the knee and I just can not believe that this is the only way.

Hello Gene. I am so sorry to hear that Lurinda is having such severe problems with knee replacements and healing. Can you give me a little background? Where are you located, where were the replacements done and by whom, and why were there three replacements done in such a short time? Were all three on the same knee? Is she having infection issues?

Broke femur 2 yrs ago and two months later infection set in. Sept 2017 had knee removed and a spacer installed. Jan 2018 had 1st knee installed. Jan to Feb removed knee & replace 2 more times. April hemoglobin went down to 4 and called EMT’s for transport to hospital for transfusion; one of th EMT’s dropped her and it re-opened incision. Been going to wound care 2 months & and hardware was visible thru one wound. Had been on IV antibiotics much of the time and now the doc says infection can not be cured and the leg must be amputated or she will be dead in 4 years.
We are in Spring Hill FL 34606. surgery done by Drs Nystrom and Moniyhan at Brooksville Regional Hospital.
All ops on right knee and yes, infection issues.
I just can not believe that there is no way but amputation.
Lurinda is 76 and I am 84 and her primary care giver and it is getting harder and harder to take care of my love. . . .
Thank you for your interest in my wife’s health.

I have also struggled with infections that required an ID specialist. She needs a good Infectious Disease Specialist (ID Specialist) at a major medical center. The closest is probably in Orlando or Tampa. She should be on strong IV antibiotics. I assume she has medicare ?

    Eric & the group:
Lurinda’s surgeon told her that the reason her wound would not heal is because the infection has created a “coating” around a portion of the exposed hardware and this coating will not let new skin grow around the hardware.
I can not believe that in this day and age of medical advances that there is nothing that can be done!
Her ID doc is one of the best in this area and he says that she can not continue on IV antibiotics for much longer and the oral ones won’t work for her.
I am trying to find a way that Lurinda will not have to loose her leg and the ability to get around without help. We are both retired and have limited financial resources; I am not looking for a hand out but only to find a way that the love of my life won’t have to loose her leg.

I fully understand and wish I was able to help more. You say that her doc is best in the area?. Is he an infectious disease doc or an orthopedic specialist? Bottom line this situation should have never happened! It really sounds negligent to me, although I am not a malpractice lawyer. Have you been to a major medical center for evaluation? Seems to me that removal of the hardware is necessary, major donated or printed skin grafts applied, and when finally healed and infection free then the hardware be re-implanted. I had a similar situation and that’s what I had to do, minus the skin grafts.

Also, losing the leg is always better than losing the life! There are many options for mobility these days and you both can live a productive enjoyable life even with the amputation. Many people do and have lost much more!
